FAQs
I'm confused, what is the difference between a counsellor, psychotherapist, psychologist and psychiatrist?
There are many therapists out there with an array of different titles, qualifications and experience, which can make choosing between professionals difficult when seeking help.. Here I will try and outline some of these differences:
It is difficult to draw a clear distinction between psychotherapists and counsellors and it is often a matter of opinion. However, generally psychotherapy training tends to be longer and their work focuses on deeper, long-term changes in the client’s thinking and behaviour. Counsellors often concentrate on specific issues and seek a way to resolve them together with the client.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in psychiatry and, unlike psychologists, psychotherapists or counsellors, are permitted to prescribe medication for psychological problems.
Psychologists undertake an initial degree in psychology and then subsequently train in specialist areas such as clinical, counselling, educational or other fields.
Counselling and Clinical Psychologists are trained to practice at least two models of evidence-based therapies.
Whoever you decide to choose, always ensure they are registered with an approved body: BACP for counsellors, UKCP for psychotherapists, BPS and HCPC for Psychologists. And remember, that the relationship is the most important thing. If you do not feel comfortable with the person you are seeing, you can always leave and try someone else. Never feel obligated to continue sessions that for whatever reason are no longer working for you..
Why do costs vary so much from one therapist to another?
My fees reflect the length and level of training I have undertaken: 8 years of study in total, including a Masters and Clinical Doctorate. Counsellors have generally undertaken less studying and have fewer qualifications. In addition, my approach to therapy tends to be shorter term and more focused than many counsellors and psychotherapists, which means that overall the therapy is more 'cost-effective'.
Do you offer reduced fees?
Unfortunately, I am unable to offer reduced-fee slots at this time.
